Too Many Tourists? Japan To Launch Preclearance Facilities in Taiwan

With the increase of Japan’s inbound visitors, the Japanese government plans to open preclearance facilities in several countries, including Taiwan, which ranks third in the number of tourists visiting Japan.

Japan and South Korea to Resolve Comfort Women Issue, What About Taiwan?

The Japanese government will provide a JPY one billion (approximately US$8.3 million) fund for South Korea and both of countries agree to put the comfort woman issue to an end. But Japan has not made any statement regarding the Taiwanese comfort women.

Japanese government hopes to put an end to the comfort women issue and that South Korea will never bring up the issue again. Meanwhile, it also asked to remove the comfort women statue in front of its embassy in Seoul and to promise to stop setting up statues of comfort women in the US.

EU Issues Warning and Taiwan to Increase Fine for Illegal Fishing

If Taiwan has not made improvements before the deadline, the European Commission will warn Taiwan with a red card and prohibit the import of Taiwanese fishery products to European countries. It is estimated that it will lead to NT$ 520 million (approximately US$ 15.9 million) worth of damages.

During Chinese State Councilor Yang Jie-chi’s visit to Japan, UNESCO decided to include the 1937 Nanjing Massacre documents in the Memory of the World. Tokyo remains suspicious about the credibility of these documents and protests against the decision. Japan is also considering suspending its funding for UNESCO.

South Korea Forcing Schools to Use Government-Issued History Textbooks

Opposing parties, students and scholars have criticized the government for distorting the history of South Korea, accusing the government for being against the democracy. More than 60 thousand professors disapprove the government's actions, along with dozens of university students, labor unions and religious and social movement organizations. Many citizens and student groups have taken to the streets and were driven away by the police.
