According to the latest research from the College of Public Health at National Taiwan University (NTU), PM2.5 particles will not only increase risk of pulmonary tuberculosis, but also increase death threats of chronic diseases. It is estimated that over 6,000 people died from the exposure of PM2.5 last year.

Li Wu-po, supervisor of Changhua medical Alliance for Public Affairs, says that according to latest statistics issued by the Health Promotion Administration, lung cancer has been the top cause of death for five consecutive years and 9,167 people nationwide died of lung cancer last year. He notes that the population growth rate in Taiwan within these 30 years accounts for 28%, but the growth rate of lung cancer has gone up to 131%.

New regulations now state once the PM2.5 concentration reaches an urgent 350 micrograms, all outdoor activity such as tourism or sports, and painting, as well as asphalt-laying for either industrial or commercial purposes, will be prohibited. All transportation, other than public transportation and electric vehicles, are banned while local governments will allow parking on red and yellow lines temporarily.
