Minister of Education says National Health Insurance should be Provided for Mainland Chinese Students

The Minister of Education Wu Se-hwa says from an education point of view, all students coming from outside of Taiwan should be treated the same. Health insurance is provided for overseas Chinese students and foreign students in Taiwan, but not for those from Mainland China, which has led to some disputes on campus.

91% of interviewees that have worked abroad say their salary was higher than their last job in Taiwan. In general, jobs overseas offer salaries that are 30% higher than what they can get in Taiwan. This shows a huge gap in salary standards inside and outside of Taiwan.

Uber Suspension in Taiwan Cancelled; MOTC to Keep Appealing

The court thinks that the registered services of Uber include management consultancy, data processing service, electronic information supply service and third-party payment service, but doesn't include auto-transportation service. The Directorate General of Highways suspending Uber is beyond the regulation of the Highway Act, so the court cancelled the suspension. Yet, the case can still be appealed.

China to Implement Self-Examination System on Online Music Starting in 2016

The Chinese Ministry of Culture won’t censor online music, but will offer guidance for the companies regarding personnel training on self-examination. They will also perform random inspections on the implementation of the self-examination process. The new regulation also requires companies to establish blacklists to strengthen market inspection and a credible management system.

Taiwan Will Complete Preparation for TPP by November 2016

Director-General of the Bureau of Foreign Trade Jenni Yang says after the full text of the TPP was released, the government will compare the text with existing regulations in Taiwan. They will explain the gaps the government should deal with, assess TPP’s impact and provide each ministry with advice for amending laws.

Taiwan Slaughter Industry Will Allow Foreign Workers in December

The Ministry of Labor and the Council of Agriculture (COA) originally planned to bring in foreign workers for tea, fruits, mushrooms, orchids, slaughterhouses and livestock, but the meeting in June only agreed to allow foreign workers in slaughterhouses and other industries were rejected.

Ministry of Education to Dissolve or Integrate 160 Universities in Taiwan

Liu Qing-xu, secretary-general of The National Federation of Teachers Unions (NFTU), says funds invested by both the government and industries are far less than other countries. To improve the quality of universities, Taiwan needs to redefine the meaning of high-level education rather than just calculate the trivial costs of running a school or simply reduce number of schools.
