The News Lens (TNL) has acquired Inside, one of the top tech-focused Chinese language news websites in Taiwan, a move that will raise TNL to the top ranks of Asian digital news sources on technology.

TNL intends to integrate the two editorial teams and back-end operations, but will keep the brands and websites separate.

TNL also welcomed a new angel investor, Felix Hong, manager of Nest (an Alphabet company) to the Taiwan office. Hong will serve as an adviser to TNL. With his extensive background in tech, the internet of things and the startup ecosystem within greater China, Hong will strengthen TNL’s presence in content distribution, international reach and content advisory. He will also help TNL to position and build Inside.

Joey Chung, TNL’s CEO and co-founder, said that with Inside, his company's first acquisition, TNL's lifestyle sub-brand ELD and the original Chinese-language news site TNL, the TNL group now reaches close to 8 million unique visitors a month. From its offices in Taipei and Hong Kong, TNL produces three other digital editions – Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, and the English-language international edition.

Fox Hsiao, Inside’s CEO, said that Inside has a driven and efficient editorial team that produces high-quality articles while maintaining editorial freedom, and that over the last six years, Inside has collaborated with dozens of freelancers to provide in-depth feature reports. Hsiao also said the acquisition should help Inside achieve its aims of becoming one of the most influential Chinese-language tech media brands.

Felix Hong will join existing investors, including North Base Media, an original seed investor in The News Lens, co-founded by Marcus Brauchli, previous executive editor of the Washington Post and managing editor of the Wall Street Journal; WISKEY Capital, Walden International, and Trinity Investment.

“We are extremely excited to welcome both Inside and Mr. Hong to The News Lens team.” Chung said. “As we start our next stage strategy of gradually consolidating and introducing different verticals for our target audience with an eye on leveraging TNL’s existing sales, video, IT and international market presence, we are eager to broaden the content offerings and international audience reach of Inside, while using this initial integration experience as a template for acquiring or introducing future brands.”

“From the start of my career, I’ve always had a particular passion and interest in media and felt that objective reporting was critical," Hong added. "With than in mind, I jumped at the chance to join TNL at this period in their development as they enter their rapid international and vertical growth stage. I hope to also add value to their internal systems, technology capabilities as well as content.”

Mario Yang, TNL's chief content officer and co-founder, said the Inside acquisition addresses a key challenge for TNL: expanding into new verticals and integrating those content areas with existing TNL teams and products. "We want to make the user experience more fulfilling including cross membership functions, data gathering, and increasing monetization," Yang said. "We aim to continue consolidating within the Taiwan market in the coming months and afterwards put more focus on expanding into other international markets through different verticals."

With the addition of Inside, The News Lens now has more than 70 staff, and plans to continue expanding its international presence, sub-brands and strategic partnerships.
