What you need to know

Taipei has plenty of Christmas activities for all the holiday lovers out there. If there is anything we left out, be sure to let us know in the comments! Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas, Taiwan.

Christmas is less than a week away and, while the quintessential Western holiday might not seem like a Taiwanese thing, Taipei has plenty to offer for anyone looking to get into the Christmas spirit. Here are five of the best activities for getting a little holiday cheer this Christmas.

Christmasland in New Taipei City

Easily the biggest Christmas event in Taiwan, Christmasland in New Taipei City is hosting its famous light tree and Christmas square. Easily accessible by MRT (Banqiao Station, Exit 3), visitors will be able to take photos, shop for gifts, eat, and even check out the Christmas concert on Dec. 23. For Christmas festivities all month long, and for a real Christmas concert this Saturday, be sure to stop by.

Christmasland features suitably themed light shows and artistic installations, including a bamboo Christmas tree.

‘Frozen’ Exhibition at Taipei 101

Okay, so Disney’s “Frozen” isn’t technically a Christmas movie, but the Scandinavian motif and winter wonderland vibe make it about as close as you can get without introducing Santa Claus as a character. If you’re a fan of the movie or the holiday season, you’re in luck, because Taipei is hosting a Frozen Carnival outside of Taipei 101 all December long. There are a bunch of activities and plenty of photo opportunities, so head over and get a few pictures with Elsa and Anna this Christmas.

Christmas Eve Candlelight Service

For a more authentic and cultural Christmas experience, check out the Christmas Eve Candlelight Service at Grace Church. Even if you aren’t religious or Christian, candlelight services are a staple of Yuletide activities and can be one of the more inspiring events. There will be caroling, candles, and of course the Nativity story. For a Christmas that keeps the “Christ,” give it a look.

Christmas at Gongguan

Ever wanted to hang out at a water park in the cold winter air? Me neither, but Taipei Water Park in Gongguan is going to change your mind. Decorated throughout December, the water park features lights and photo opportunities aplenty. If you are looking for some classic, Christmasy lights and decor, stop by the Taipei Water Park in Gongguan. Yes, we know how strange it sounds, but you won’t regret it.

Christmas Dinner at restaurants all over Taipei

It simply wouldn’t be Christmas without a tremendous spread. Fortunately, Christmas dinner events are nearly ubiquitous around Taipei, with a number of hotels and restaurants hosting dinners. We recommend the Christmas buffet at the Grand Hyatt, and dinner at On Tap, Eddy’s Cantina, Blue Rooster, and The Park. Any of these dinners will leave you stuffed until New Years, but book ASAP because seats fill up fast.

Share the Christmas Warmth

Just like your stocking, there's room for a little extra something. It also wouldn’t be Christmas without giving a little back, and thanks to Aranza Duarte, now you have a chance to do exactly that. Struck by the winter cold, Aranza is accepting donations of clothes to keep the homeless in the capital warm through the wet and windy months. Head down to the Louisa Coffee next to Daan Park MRT station on Dec. 23 with your bundles and start the new year minimal. Clothes will be collected between 1-4 p.m. and donated to the Wanhua Social Welfare Center.
