In the travel industry, punctuality is one of the most significant performance indicators. Every time a flight is delayed or cancelled, the responsible airlines and airport always suffer considerable loss, even losing loyal customers.

OAG, an air-travel intelligence firm based in the UK, collected flight data from airlines and airports around the world and issued on FlightStats website its end-of-the-year report that unveils on-time departure performance rankings. The average on-time rate of the world sits at 75.56%. Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport ranks 170 among the 188 airports examined in the report and 48 among the 63 airports in the Asia-Pacific region with a 59% on-time rate.

The Washington Post reports, Osaka International Airport in Japan takes first place with a 94.74% on-time rate. Panama’s Tocumen International Airport ranks second and another airport in Japan, Haneda Airport, ranks third on the list. Haneda airport also holds the third-most passenger traffic in the world.

Airports in China and Hong Kong also ranked poorly. Beijing Capital International Airport ranked 161 with a 54.37% on-time rate, Hong Kong International Airport 172 with 58.82% and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport 182 with 54.37%.

China Times reports, China Airlines says that Taiwan has a different measurement for on-time rate as opposed to the one conducted by OAG. According to the measurement implemented by Taiwan’s Civil Aeronautics Administration, China Airlines’ on-time rate is 98.3%.

UDN reports, the airline with the best on-time performance worldwide is Japan Airlines, which holds an 89.44% on-time rate. Spain’s Iberia ranks second and All Nippon Airways third.

Japan Airlines says that punctuality is usually contingent upon the weather and other conditions, so the company wants to specifically thank passengers for their cooperation and tolerance, which helped the airline earn the honor. It will set higher goals in the future and make sure quality service is provided.
