Using flashes of life and death as a theme, Xiao Sheng-wen, a graduate student at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST), has received nominations in two prominent international animation awards, the American ACM SIGGRAPH and Dutch HAFF.

Xiao’s 3D animation,"J’ai Vu, Une Fois, Une Magnifique Image," depicts moments of flies, fish and Moltrechti’s green tree frogs preying and being hunted. It will automatically be nominated for Best Animated Short Film in The Oscars if it wins Best Animated Film at ACM SIGGRAPH.

Apple Daily reports, NTUST points out that ACM SIGGRAPH is currently the world’s largest computer graphics and interactive technology event, and is regarded as the Academy Awards of the animation industry. Internationally renowned movie production companies, such as Pixar and DreamWorks, take part in the occasion, and many innovative animation techniques are introduced at the event.

China Times reports, Xiao says he chose the three animals as main characters because they all have unique optical systems and happen to form a food chain.

The film will be shown from August 8-12 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
