To solve the parking problems in Taipei and following up the cancellation of free parking spaces, Taipei mayor Ko Wen-je says public parking areas will undergo expansion and civilian constructions will also be requested to have parking spaces.

Ko says that streets are for cars to drive on, not for parking. You should have a parking space ready if you buy a car and shouldn’t occupy the streets with your vehicle. In short, park your own car.

UDN reports, Zhong Hui-yu, head of the Taipei City Department of Transportation, says the current method is to hope that building parking lots can self-satisfy for the most part and cars can back into off-street parking facilities. For motorcycles though, there must be an area with sufficient parking spaces and start collecting fees. This will raise the turnover rate and build a more orderly parking procedure.

Apple Daily reports, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Communication, so far only Tokyo has implemented measures for self-provided parking.

Wang Mu-heng, Deputy Director of the Department of Railways and Highways at the ministry, says the department has studied whether or not implementing this policy will cause a chain effect.

Many older communities do not have parking spaces, so it will be difficult to sell these properties. Housing costs for new buildings with parking spaces will also be much higher and unaffordable.

In light of local self-government, Wang believes the Taipei government can implement these parking policies, but it has to consider social acceptability and bear controversy. The ministry will also continue to promote public transportation.
